150th SHILOH……FRIDAY PM (continued)

So I retrieved my equipment and put it in the Sibley Tent. I was then give the job of digging the Fire Pit for our camp fire., while the boys from our unit took their cars to the Reenactor Parking Lot and walked back to camp. By the time they got back, I had dug the Fire Pit and was sopping wet again from the exertion and humidity.

We didn’t have a unit meal for supper. Everyone just ate the vittles they had brought for their supper. We were resting well. You always catch 40 winks whenever you can at a reenactment. There was an officer’s and First Sergeant’s call to go to a meeting with Toren at his campsite. Captain Keenan let me go along and I really appreciated it. The agenda was set for the next day’s morning battle. We were to attack the Union Camps at first light, which was what happened at the Battle of Shiloh. Once the meeting was over, we returned to our camp and the battle information was passed along to the men.

We gathered fire wood and I brought back some hay, which was located near the battalion firewood pile, for my bed. I put the hay on the ground and then put my gum blanket, sometimes called a Ground Cloth, on top of it. It is quite comfortable for a while until your weight smashes the hay down and then you are back to really just sleeping on the ground. Anyway, we all hit the hay early due to the early morning wake up. Everyone was bushed from their long drive or in my cast participating in the Tactical.
